Presence in the Strait
Common summer visitor to forests and grasslands (>32 pairs). Some birds winter at La Janda and the Guadiaro River basin.
Identification
The smallest of the eagles, with a compact and well-proportioned shape. Feathered tarsi. Two morphs: pale and dark phases. The pale morph is commoner, with white underparts, dark primaries and trailing edge of wing; broad buff band across wing-coverts and scapulars contrasts with the dark primaries. The dark phase has dark brown underparts.
Movements
Migrant (>7,500 post. migr.) with peaks in 2nd hf. March and 2nd hf. September.
Ring recoveries
Spain (11) and one adult bird ringed on 21.10.91 on postnuptial migration that was controlled on 4.10.96 in Tetuan (Morocco).
