Presence in the Strait

Common winter visitor to coasts and marshes (>180), more abundant during migration periods. Summer visitors may be seen.

Identification

Medium-sized bird, brownish-grey with whitish lower body, bright red legs and bill-base. In flight, displays broad white trailing edge to wing. Juveniles have dull reddish bills.

Movements

Peaks in 2nd hf. April and 1st hf. August.

Ring recoveries

Denmark (35), Germany (12), Holland (12), Sweden (9), France (4), Belgium (2), Poland (2), Norway (1) and Finland (1). Special mention should be made of a control at the River Guadiaro estuary of a bird ringed in Poland 31 days previously, some 2,402 Km. distant.
