Presence in the Strait

Abundant resident in all habitats with trees or scrub.

Identification

Similar to a Garden Warbler, stocky and with greyer tones. Males have a black crown, brown in females and juveniles.

Movements

Prenuptial migration peaks in 2nd hf. February for non-Iberian birds and in 2nd hf. March for Iberian birds (see chapter on «Purpose of Ringing»). However, postnuptial migration only presents one peak period in 2nd hf. October, due to the overlapping of both populations (Iberian birds in September-October and non-Iberian birds in October-November).

Chiffchaff (Phylloscopus collybita) and Iberian Chiffchaff (Phylloscopus brehmii) The Phylloscopus brehmii, that used to be considered a subspecies of the Phyllocopus collybita, has recently been catalogued as a different species. Almost the same morphologically, they can only be distinguished in the field by their song, and in the area of the Strait also by their phenology (see chapter on «Purpose of Ringing»).
