Presence in the Strait
Scarce pelagic winter visitor.
Identification
Similar to a Common Gull, but the wing tips are completely black, lacking white mirrors, wings have two tones of grey (coverts and back darker) and blackish legs. In winter has a plain greenish bill and a white head with blackish earspot. Juveniles have a distinctive zigzag pattern (“W” shape) on upperparts, similar to a Little Gull, but larger with a grey back and mantle, and white crown without black flecks.
