Presence in the Strait
Common resident in forests in the Northern half of the territory and expanding in the SW.
Identification
Large with greenish upperparts and green grey underparts. Bright-red crown and yellow rump. Males have a red center to a black moustache and a black eye-patch. Females have a black moustache. Juvenile birds have upperparts spotted white and underparts heavily spotted black. Its call is a powerful and strident “neigh”.
Movements
Sedentary with juvenile dispersal between July and January, with peaks in August.
Ring recoveries
Chick ringed in its nest in Cuenca on 21.06.81 controlled on 28.08.81 at Barbate, 68 days later, 494 Km. away.
