Presence in the Strait
Occasional. There have been records since the end of the 19th Century. However it has always been rare and localised at La Miel stream (Algeciras), where a pair was seen feeding their chicks on 30.04.71; after that there is only one more record at that place of a bird on 31.08.94. There are also records of a nest at the Sequilla Mountains stream (Los Barrios) in the ‘70s, one sighting of a bird on 10.12.78 by the Hozgarganta River and another sighting in the Ojén Mountains (Tarifa) in 1991; on the 2nd. of May in that year, a pair with chicks in a nest was located near the Manilva River.
Identification
Unmistakable, stout with short tail and rounded wings. Dark grey back and dark chestnut underparts with a white breast. Low, straight flight with fast wing beats. When perches it performs bobbing movements with tail flicking downwards. Its call resembles a «sit sit sit».
