Presence in the Strait
Scarce coastal migrant with irregular numbers wintering (<8).
Identification
The largest and most robust of the Calidris. Summer plumage rufous-orange, similar to the Curlew Sandpiper. Uniform grey in winter. In flight, displays narrow white wing bar and pale grey rump. Juveniles share the same winter plumage as adults, but with scaly appearance.
Movements
Peaks in 1st hf. May and 1st hf. September.
